The Skoolie Ceiling Install We Should Have Done Years Ago
If you’re building a skoolie and thinking:
“We’ll just finish the ceiling later…”
Don’t.
Seriously—don’t.
Because what should be one of the simplest parts of your build can quickly turn into one of the most frustrating.
After living in our bus full-time for years, we finally tackled our skoolie ceiling—and let’s just say…
It was a process.

Why This Project Was So Much Harder Than It Needed to Be
Here’s the reality no one talks about:
We didn’t build our ceiling when the bus was empty.
Instead, we were working around:
Walls
Cabinets
Wiring
A ceiling fan
Tight corners and weird angles
And that turned this into:
“Project on project on project… because every project is inherently eight others.”
⚡ Upgrading Our Electrical System (12V → 24V)
While installing the ceiling, we also upgraded our lighting system.
What we changed:
Switched from 12V puck lights → 24V strip lights
Installed a new fuse block
Ran wiring directly from our 24V battery system
Added a voltage regulator to protect our fans
Why this matters:
We lost BOTH of our MaxxAir fans at the same time due to voltage issues.
We’re not making that mistake again.
⚠️ Electrical Lessons You Should NOT Ignore
If you’re new to this, don’t wing it. Here’s what actually matters:
Wire colors can lie → always test polarity
Always do a pull test after crimping
Clean terminals = better connection
Use a multimeter (guessing will cost you)

Electrical
Heat Shrink Butt Connectors for small gauge wire (26-24 gauge)
Voltage Converter / Regulator (we connected these to our Maxxair Fans)
Tools
Ceiling Install
Ceiling Panels (we ordered them through this Home Depot link - https://bit.ly/4bDYYF0)
The Unexpected MVP
Strong Magnets (seriously, game changer)
👉 If you’re building a skoolie, this is one of those tools you don’t realize you need until you really need it.
😅 The “Tricky Bits” (Where Everything Went Sideways)
Most of the ceiling? Smooth.
Then we hit:
The fan opening
The old emergency hatch
Wall transitions
Tight install zones
This is where builds stop being “fun DIY projects” and start becoming…
Problem-solving marathons.
❌ The Biggest Skoolie Build Mistake We Made
If you remember ONE thing from this post:
👉 Do your ceiling before anything else.
Because once your build is in place:
Nothing is square anymore
Access disappears
Errors compound
By the time we got to the last panels…
We were off by inches.
✅ What We’d Do Differently (Learn From Us)
If we were starting over:
Use a laser level from day one
Create a centerline to build off of
Plan for spacing + trim
Accept that perfection isn’t realistic
🧲 The Tool That Saved This Entire Project
Magnets.
Not even kidding.
They:
Held panels in place while adhesive set
Freed up our hands
Made impossible angles doable
Without them, this project would’ve taken twice as long.
🚐 Living in a Bus While Building It (The Truth)
A lot of people romanticize this.
And yes—there are benefits:
You learn what actually works
You build based on real life
But the tradeoff?
It’s messy.
It’s overwhelming.
And it makes simple projects harder.
The Final Result (Imperfect… But Better)
Is it perfect?
No.
Is it a massive upgrade?
Yes.
And honestly?
The only people who will ever notice the flaws… are us.
🎯 If You’re Just Starting Your Skoolie Build…
Here’s your shortcut:
Do your ceiling early
Plan your electrical system ahead of time
Expect things to go wrong
Build for real life—not perfection
